Check Whether You Qualify

Minnesota’s medical cannabis program is no longer limited to a fixed list — a healthcare practitioner can approve any condition they judge appropriate. The conditions below are simply the ones patients certify for most often:

Step 2

Get a Practitioner’s Certification

Your certifying provider must be a physician, physician assistant (PA), or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) licensed in Minnesota. Certifying is voluntary, which means some providers do it and some don’t.

Begin with the provider you already see. When they aren’t participating, the next step is finding one in your area who is.

Veterans*

A practitioner’s certification is no longer required for veterans. A dedicated self-certification form lets you certify on your own, which makes the whole process markedly shorter.

Finding a Provider Who Certifies

• Begin with the healthcare team already treating you
• Request a referral to a provider who certifies patients
• Search for clinics currently accepting certification appointments
• Both virtual and in-person visits are commonly offered

Step 3

Register With the Office of Cannabis Management

Certification triggers an email explaining how to apply to Minnesota’s medical cannabis program by way of the Medical Cannabis Registry.

What to Have on Hand

• A government-issued photo ID — Minnesota driver’s license or state ID
• Access to whichever email address your provider listed for you
• Your online enrollment completed inside 60 days of certification

Good to Know

• There’s no fee to register — the state eliminated them in July 2023
• Applications get reviewed inside 30 days

• Caregivers are no longer subject to a background check

Step 4

Submit Your Patient Self-Evaluation

With approval in hand, log in to your Medical Cannabis Registry account and complete a Patient Self-Evaluation (PSE). Your first dispensary visit can’t happen until it’s filed.

How the PSE Works

• One is required ahead of your first-time patient consultation
• Every dispensary pickup calls for a fresh one
• Following your first purchase, they’re due each quarter throughout year one
• Your registered caregiver is permitted to submit it for you

Step 5

Book Your First Consultation

That’s the last of it. Set up a first-time patient consultation at your preferred dispensary, where a pharmacist will look over your account, talk through what you need, and recommend the medical cannabis product suited to it.
